A: The light used for industrial purposes is usually in the range 4000 to 5000K, but if color-sensitive inspection is being carried out, then a CRI of 90 or higher, together with consistent color quality, is advantageous.

For general maintenance, storage, and construction, a color temperature in the range of 4000 to 5000K is a sensible starting point since it produces a neutral to cool white light with good visual clarity. A CRI of 80 is usually sufficient for ordinary tasks. But if it is important to be able to correctly identify colors—such as when dealing with wires, looking at paint, carrying out printing, doing detailed work, or carrying out precise assembly—then a CRI of 90 or above should be selected. You should also take into account glare control, flicker performance, the consistency of color from batch to batch, and any color shift over time. A higher color temperature does not mean that the work light is brighter or of better quality. The choice should finally be confirmed by testing the light on the particular surface in question, and visibility should be judged on the basis of the measured illuminance rather than simply the color temperature.
